What’s in a name? A lot of baggage and trauma unfortunately

What’s in a name? A lot of baggage and trauma unfortunately Banzai Japan Aoi Hoshi MV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_vQsyC_F1A Just over four years ago, Japanese morning television had a collective cry over the passing of Johnny Kitagawa. The 87-year-old founder of powerhouse talent agency Johnny & Associates died of a stroke on July 9, 2019, and TV was transformed into a string of memorial services. This past week, the attention was back on Kitagawa — but for an aspect of his music career that was notably missing during those fervent tributes of 2019.   On Thursday, news shows, livestreams and thousands of users on X (formerly Twitter) watched as Julie Keiko Fujishima, Kitagawa’s niece, acknowledged that the company founder had sexually abused agency employees for decades. (A recently released report by a third-party team concluded that Kitagawa started sexually abusing boys in the 1950s when he was in his 20s, and then young boy band members at his agency from the 1970s to the 2010s.) Fujishima then resigned as president of the company, passing control over to Johnny’s talent Noriyuki Higashiyama (who is also facing abuse allegations). The acknowledgement came in a press conference that lasted over four hours, with questions from reporters, discussions of the future and dashes of absurdity. The controversial issue of Kitagawa’s history of abuse has hovered around the company since the 1960s, but it became unavoidable for Johnny’s to address as renewed media interest, both international and domestic, reached a tipping point this year after former trainee Kauan Okamoto detailed being assaulted by the founder to weekly magazine Shukan Bunshun and the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan. The events of this past week do not mark an end to the agency dealing with its ghosts, rather this is a starting point for how, exactly, things will change now that the allegations have been acknowledged. The full extent of the fallout remains to be seen — compensation for Kitagawa’s victims is still unresolved and scrutiny may shift to the domestic media, which largely failed to report on the issue for decades. For Johnny’s, one of the nation’s leading entertainment agencies, it is now a matter of how to move forward — barring any more unpleasant discoveries. Netizens have debated whether it was necessary for Fujishima to resign over her uncle’s crimes, but the symbolism alone justifies it. As detailed by the third-party report released at the end of August, one of the major reasons Kitagawa’s abuse remained unchecked for decades was the family nature of the company, with Kitagawa’s sister, Mary Kitagawa, holding a prominent position of power there until 2020. While Fujishima (Mary’s daughter) currently remains the company’s primary stockholder, her stepping down from the position her uncle held at least ends the family’s stranglehold on the agency, signaling the chance to create a new era. When it comes to internal operations and general business practices, however, Johnny & Associates seemingly entered a new era as soon as its figurehead died. The time when a single person could control the entirety of Japanese entertainment — like Kitagawa did — had passed well before he did. Johnny’s has since morphed into a more modern entertainment agency. Though it used to be intensely wary of the internet, it now embraces YouTube and allows (even encourages) talent to have a social media presence. ADVERT Hotel Hilton London Excel Book Hilton Hotel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bs7ghOFruVw&t=1s ADVERT It has become less hostile toward the media, too. A question that came up frequently at Thursday’s press conference was whether it would stop discouraging TV networks from featuring similar male-centric pop groups from competing companies, referring to the persistent idea that Johnny’s would use its clout to keep its rivals sidelined. But, that hasn’t been the reality for a while now; J-pop acts from agencies such as LDH earn plenty of screen time on the same shows as Johnny’s groups these days. However, Johnny’s still needs to sever ties to its tainted past. It’s right there in its name — can a company that has now formally recognized that its founder sexually abused talent within its ranks still bear that abuser’s name? Can the developmental roster where Kitagawa primarily preyed on young boys still be called “Johnny’s Jr.”? The answer is “absolutely not” if the company is serious about making amends and changing for the future. The name issue came up multiple times at the press conference. At first, Higashiyama waffled on the suggestion that the company should rename itself and seemed to say it wouldn’t — leading a reporter to compare this to a company being called “Hitler Kabushiki Gaisha” (“Hitler Corp.”), which was the day’s most out-of-pocket moment. Later on, however, Higashiyama indicated that he was open to a change, and the new vice president, Yoshihiko Inohara, referred to “Johnny’s” as having “the name of a criminal.” Johnny’s simply can’t be Johnny’s anymore. While Kitagawa’s contributions to the global entertainment industry are undeniable, his legacy can’t be whitewashed. Changing the name and branding would signal a commitment to moving forward as a much better company. The agency should instead place its focus and future on the people who have always made it a juggernaut in the entertainment industry — the performers. Despite this year’s reckoning, the agency’s groups remain a staple at the top of sales charts, with current flagship act Snow Man’s latest single selling over 665,000 copies on its first day. The fandoms around these groups have always been able to separate the art from the agency (and it’s naive to think fans weren’t well aware of the rumors over the years), because they are there for the talent — not the people in a corporate boardroom. Johnny Kitagawa is dead and will never face consequences for his actions. The wealth of performers that he had a hand in nurturing into stars are still here, though, and their work, not Kitagawa, should be the driving force of the company’s legacy. Asahi to end use of Johnny’s personalities in ads

Asahi to end use of Johnny’s personalities in ads Banzai Japan Aoi Hoshi MV Asahi Group Holdings plans to halt the use of Johnny & Associates personalities in its advertising from now on, in response to a sexual abuse scandal involving the major talent agency’s late founder. The major Japanese food and beverage maker made the decision not to feature Johnny’s talents in its future sales promotion activities “to prevent itself from promoting human rights violations by a business partner,” an Asahi public relations official said Friday. In television commercials and online advertisements, the company has been using members of the agency, including Junichi Okada, a former member of the now-disbanded male idol group V6, for a Super Dry beer product in a special can that produces foam when opened. Snow Man, a nine-member male group, has also been featured in commercials for its Mintia candy brand. ADVERT Hotel Hilton London Excel Book Hilton Hotel ADVERT The airing of such advertisements will be suspended in stages. The company plans not to renew existing advertising contracts with the agency. “We demand that Johnny & Associates implement preventive measures swiftly and take sincere actions, including offering relief for victims,” the Asahi official said. Asahi’s industry rivals are also considering moves. Suntory Holdings said it “will closely check (the talent agency’s) responses and decide how to deal with the situation.” Kirin Holdings said it will consider its response after seeing relief measures to be rolled out by the agency. Johnny & Associates considers changing name as criticism mounts

Johnny & Associates considers changing name as criticism mounts Banzai Japan Aoi Hoshi MV Johnny & Associates is considering changing its name amid growing calls that say such a move is necessary for the company to start afresh. In the weeks since the talent agency publicly acknowledged that its late founder, Johnny Kitagawa, had sexually abused the company’s underage celebrities, companies began to announce they would cancel promotion contracts with the firm’s performers for their commercials. The agency’s decision during a news conference on Sept. 7 to retain the company name — despite its association with an alleged sexual predator — drew a lot of public criticism. According to a message on the company website on Tuesday, the agency was “discussing the future of the company, taking into consideration opinions and criticisms.” The entertainment giant said that it held a board meeting earlier that day and reached a consensus regarding the basic strategy for the company’s future and how it should be operated. The agenda included: whether to change the company’s name; what to do about the stocks owned by Julie Keiko Fujishima, Kitagawa’s niece (she has stepped down as president but still owns 100% of the company’s shares); how to compensate the victims; and what to do with its performers and other employees. The agency said that it will make an announcement regarding the details of its discussions on Oct. 2. The talent agency earlier this month acknowledged that Kitagawa has sexually abused its performers for decades, and apologized to the victims. Fujishima was replaced by Noriyuki Higashiyama, a senior performer at the agency, who promised to compensate the victims for their suffering. Regarding the decisions by some companies to distance themselves from the agency by not using their performers, Masakazu Tokura, chairman of the Japan Business Federation — Japan’s largest business lobby, better known as Keidanren — said that although sex abuse is a crime, cutting business ties with the scandal-hit agency will also inflict financial pain onto the victims. ADVERT Hotel Hilton London Excel Book Hilton Hotel ADVERT “This is child abuse. It’s a criminal act. It can’t be tolerated,” Tokura said. “But in a sense, the performers at Johnny’s are victims, not perpetrators. They have worked hard every day,” he said. “It would be damaging to deprive them of their opportunity (to perform) for a long period of time.” Meanwhile, the government plans to set up hotlines for male victims of sexual abuse, and officials well-versed on such issues will be taking the calls and connecting them to local support centers and police if necessary. Ayuko Kato, the new minister in charge of child policies, said Tuesday that two new hotlines will be set up from Friday through Dec. 23 — one for sexual abuse against adult men, and one for boys and their parents. The government has a separate hotline for sex abuse victims regardless of gender that can be reached at #8891. Callers are connected to a local support center. The hotline for men will be open from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays and can be reached at 0120-213-533. The hotline for boys and their parents will be open from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and can be reached at 0120-210-109. “Anyone can be a victim of sexual abuse regardless of gender,” said Kato. “Men and boys suffering from sexual abuse can call the hotline and get the necessary support.” In a 2020 survey by the Cabinet Office, 1% of the 1,635 adult male respondents of various ages said they had experienced being forced into having sexual intercourse against their will, with the largest age group being in the 20s. Johnny’s changes name to Starto Entertainment

Johnny’s changes name to Starto Entertainment Banzai Japan Aoi Hoshi MV After months of speculation, the talent agency formerly known as Johnny & Associates announced its new name: Starto Entertainment (stylized in all caps). Agency officials presented the news in a special video made available to members of Family Club, the company’s official fan club, on Friday. In the video, company COO Yoshihiko Inohara also revealed that self-styled entrepreneur Atsushi Fukuda would serve as CEO. Starto Entertainment will handle all talent and entertainment business related to the performers and groups under the agency’s purview. Fan club members submitted potential names for the company in recent months. “The name is derived from ‘Star’ and ‘To,’ as in ‘to head toward the future,’” the company wrote in an English statement sent to the media Friday. “It is an expression of our commitment to all our artists current and yet to come; with whom we inaugurate a new era in accordance with their individual talents and personal goals.” In September, the agency announced it would split into two companies in the wake of the entertainment industry’s reckoning with founder Johnny Kitagawa’s decadeslong history of sexually abusing children. The other company, named Smile-Up, focuses on helping Kitagawa’s victims receive financial compensation and has no involvement in current business operations. In early December, officials from Smile-Up announced the company had started compensating victims of Kitagawa’s sexual abuse. So far, 23 people have received payments, and the company says 834 people in total are seeking compensation. Alongside financial payments to victims, the company has made other efforts to take responsibility and signal the start of a new chapter. Earlier this fall, the agency announced it would not claim management fees for advertisements and television appearances by the agency’s performers for one year. All fees received would instead go to the performers themselves. ADVERT Hotel Hilton London Excel Book Hilton Hotel ADVERT Following the public scrutiny of Kitagawa’s history of abuse, many television broadcasters and companies have distanced themselves from the talent powerhouse’s performers. Most prominently, national broadcaster NHK will not feature any acts from Starto Entertainment at this year’s “Kohaku Uta Gassen.” It’s the first time in 44 years that entertainers from the agency will not appear on the annual New Year’s Eve music show. However, performers from the agency have begun appearing in more TV shows and ad campaigns in recent weeks. Several of Starto Entertainment’s groups have also announced plans to hold livestreamed shows and concerts on YouTube on Dec. 31. In changing its name to Starto Entertainment, the talent agency will scrub all references to its disgraced founder from its current structure. Its old name was removed from the company’s headquarters in Tokyo in early October, while the pop group formerly known as Johnny’s West officially changed its name to West, among other changes. According to the official statement from Starto Entertainment, the company will also focus on three new goals: “Greater digitization, including the establishment of a proprietary music streaming platform; increased global openness and overseas outreach; metaverse market entry: extending artists’ talents with state-of-the-art Hotel Novotel London Excel Book Novotel Hotel Surely this is the world?
